Instant Hedging Plants

Pre Grown Instant Hedges in varying species and sizes

At Hedging UK, we grow a range of instant hedging plants here on the nursery in Lancashire.
Instant hedges provide immediate impact, which means you won’t have to wait 2–5 years for your hedge or tall pot grown plants to establish. All the growing of the instant hedges takes place at the nursery, where they are
carefully planted into hedging troughs at usually three plants per metre and nurtured into a mature hedge that can be planted all year-round.

Our instant hedging and formal hedges come pre-grown in 1-metre lengths and are available in various heights and varieties. With a pre-grown, ready-made hedge, the plants and the roots are already knitted together, making installation a straightforward process. Simply dig a trench of the required length, depth and width, remove the plants from their pots and install the plants in 1-metre sections to the length required. Backfill, water and feed your new hedge to help it make a big impact straight away.

Our mature hedging plants have a very high success rate as all our instant hedging units and pre grown hedges are pot grown, meaning there is no damage to the root system. When it comes to mature plants that have instant impressive impact; Hedging UK have got you covered, all of our Instant hedging plants are of superb quality. With both evergreen and deciduous hedging varieties to choose from, we should be able to provide you with the right hedge you require. Please see below for more frequently asked questions on our instant hedges.

Looking for a New Instant Hedge?

At Hedging UK, we specialise in offering a diverse range of instant hedging plants that are versatile, adaptable, and visually appealing for various garden spaces and landscapes.
Our pre-grown hedges are designed to create natural barriers that provide privacy, block unwanted views or noise, and screen out neighbouring properties. This makes them the perfect solution for establishing a private haven within a larger garden or property.

Compared to building a wall or installing a tall fence, hedging plants are a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative. Once your instant hedge is established, maintaining it typically requires only an annual trim or prune, allowing you to enjoy the benefits with minimal upkeep.

Our mature hedge options are ideal for those seeking instant hedging solutions as they eliminate the need to wait for and nurture smaller plants as they grow to form an established hedge.

Hedging UK takes pride in offering high-quality instant hedging products, including mature hedges and mature plants, to suit various garden styles, preferences, and conditions.

No matter your reason for incorporating an instant hedge into your landscape design, you can rely on our expertise and extensive selection to find the perfect solution that meets your specific needs and enhances your outdoor living experience.

Why Choose Instant Hedging?

There are several benefits to planting Instant hedges in a garden or landscape:

  • Privacy: Instant hedges are dense and tall, making them an excellent choice for creating privacy screens. They can help block out noise and provide a sense of seclusion in your outdoor space.
  • Windbreaks: Instant hedges can also serve as effective windbreaks, providing shelter for other plants and helping to prevent soil erosion.
  • Aesthetics: The formal appearance of hedges can add structure and visual interest to a garden or landscape. While an instant hedge provides an instant effect, they can be trimmed into a shape or height that suits your needs.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Instant hedges often provide a food source for birds and small mammals. The dense foliage of the hedge can also provide shelter for wildlife.
  • Low Maintenance: Instant hedges are comparatively low maintenance as they are already established . They require pruning once or twice a year to maintain their shape and size and can tolerate a range of soil types.
  • Longevity: Hedging plants are long-lived and can provide an attractive and functional feature in a garden or landscape for many years.

Why Plant an instant Hedge?

Plants grown on a nursery tend to grow faster than those planted in a garden. Our instant hedges will have taken on average 4–5 years to get up to a saleable size and density. Growing them in your garden would probably take a year or two longer, so we can potentially save you 5–6 years of growing time. There is also no spacing to work out and the roots and foliage are already knitted together as a hedge.

How easy is it to plant an instant hedge?

Planting an instant hedge is relatively straightforward. Our instant hedging comes pre grown in 1-metre lengths. The roots are 30cm wide by 30cm deep by 1 metre long. Simply dig a trench of the required length, depth and width, remove the plants from their pots and install the plants in 1-metre sections to the length required. Backfill, water and feed your new hedge to help it make a big impact straight away.

Will I need to water my instant Hedge after planting?

All instant hedging plants should be watered well straight after planting. After this, the timing and frequency of watering will depend on the time of year. The first spring and summer after planting is the most critical time for a newly planted instant hedge, as the provision of adequate water is essential. The application of mulching materials will go a very long way towards improving water retention in the soil. If you are planting a long hedge, it would be worth investing in a drip irrigation system that can run the length of the hedge and provide water equally along it. There are various systems available and we are happy to advise on the systems we have used and found effective.

Do I need to trim my Instant hedge?

We recommend trimming your instant hedging plants at least once during the first year. For formal hedges that have been trimmed quite tightly, extra trimming will be required to maintain nice straight edges.

When should I trim my Instant hedge?

The trimming and pruning of instant hedges is best carried out in the spring before the plants start growing again, or in the autumn when their growth starts to shut down for the winter.

How do I trim my Instant hedge?

We grow many varieties of instant hedging plants on the nursery and would offer slightly differing advice for different species. Please refer to the FAQ section specific to the type of hedging plants required.

Do I need to feed my Instant Hedge?

We would always recommend feeding your instant hedges at least once a year. Feeding will vary according to the species and time of year, but in general we would recommend feeding the roots to get them established first before feeding the top part of the hedge. Again, various products are available and we can advise on the best course of action depending on your circumstances. On the nursery, we generally wait until we have trimmed all the hedges in the spring and then give them a feed as the new growth begins to emerge. We use slow releasing feeds such as ‘Growmore’ and controlled release fertilisers, as they provide a steady release of nutrients over a longer period of time. On the nursery, we usually give the instant hedging plants a second feed in late spring and at least one feed in the summer.

Do you grow your own Instant hedging Plants?

All of the mature hedging plants we sell are grown outside here on our nursery in Holmeswood, Lancashire, where we produce robust plants that are quick to establish. If we are unable to supply the hedging you require from our own stock, then we will inform you of this and offer to source the plants from one of the reputable nurseries we work with.
