Description of Leylandii Trees
Green Leylandii trees are derived from the Cupressocyparis leylandii species, it is a hybrid conifer trees and a cross between the Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and the Nootka cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis). This fast-growing evergreen conifer tree is still one of our most popular choices for a tall evergreen hedge or screen. We always advise customers that the vigorous growth of this tree requires regular maintenance to manage its height and spread. Although this may sound like hard work, the reality is that a leylandii hedge can be maintained with 1 – 2 annual trims to keep them looking tidy and within bounds. Green Leylandii has the potential to reach considerable heights if not appropriately pruned. Once a Leylandii hedge has reached the desired height the leading stem should be cut to height and this height maintained with an annual prune.

Planting a leylandii hedge
Proper spacing is essential to allow for optimal growth and to prevent overcrowding, which can impact the health of the hedge. For a low Leylandii hedge at around 6 foot, we would recommend planting our 10 litre trees at 50-75cm apart. For a taller leylandii hedge or screen we would recommend planting at 100cm+ apart. It is always important to consider is the purpose of your hedge i.e. full screen, or low or tall hedge etc, as this will determine how far apart individual plants should be planted and crucially, how many plants you will need. These factors are explored further in our Hedge Plant Spacing Guide.
Leylandii Hedge Maintenance
Due to its vigorous growth, it’s crucial to consider the potential height of a Leylandii hedge in relation to its intended purpose. Pruning at an early stage and maintaining a regular trimming schedule will help manage the hedges height and overall appearance. While Green Leylandii is a popular choice, it’s important to consider local regulations regarding hedge height to avoid disputes with neighbours. Open communication and regular maintenance can help mitigate potential issues and ensure a harmonious relationship between the hedge and its surroundings. More information on pruning can be found in our Pruning and Maintenance Guide.
Leylandii pests, diseases and problems
Leylandii trees can be susceptible to various diseases, including cypress aphid infestations and fungal infections like cypress canker, especially if they are stressed or poorly maintained. With a regular maintenance program including an annual feed and trim with regular health inspections a leylandii hedge should be problem free for up to 20 years and over.
